Every family has its own history handed down for one generation to the next and whose mains fonctions are to preserve its identity, its legitimacy and a proper code of behaviour. Certain events and caracters are selected : they became exemplary for those who either told the family story or listen to it. These narratives are coloured by the inheritance System and by the historical context. The way a genealogy is commented upon by the heiress allowed us to understand better how the sharings of the property and subsequent buying back are experienced intimately by the household. It also inpointed the differences between the "good" inlaws who work for the household and the "bad" kinsmen who take away a part of the inheritance and who suffer grief at departing and are overtaken by failure when they are away. These family stories then became legends about the family origin.

Toute famille a une histoire transmise d'une génération l'autre et qui a pour fonctions essentielles la distinction, la légitimation et la pédagogie. Événements et personnages choisis y sont surinvestis et manipulés : ils deviennent exemplaires pour ceux qui disent et ceux qui écoutent l'histoire. Le système de la transmission des biens et le contexte historique influencent ces récits. Le commentaire d'une généalogie par sa descendante a permis de voir comment étaient vécus de l'intérieur les partages et les rachats de terres par les propriétaires d'une exploitation pyrénéenne. Il montre aussi comment on distingue entre bons alliés, ceux qui travaillent pour la maison et mauvais consanguins, ceux qui partent en emportant une part du patrimoine familial et auxquels adviennent douleurs des départs et échecs lointains. Les récits familiaux deviennent alors des légendes fondatrices.
