Alberto Gil Novales, Cartwright an the Idea of the Commonwealth in Spain. Alberto Gil Novales exhumed a curious text of Major Cartwright, the famous radical English leader. This text contains a political dialogue between an Italian, a Spaniard, a Frenchman, a German and an Englishman (1825) dedicated to Miguel Riego, brother of the Spanish revolutionary general. Those assembled were in accord in wanting to see a constitution that institutes both a representative regime with all positions being elective. The only free constitution corresponds, otherwise, to the divine order. The ideal regime is the Commonwealth (Republic translated in Spain by the Public Safety). What’s more, the English spokesman, Cartwright, advocated a return to [civic games], analogous to the Olympic games, so that in each nation the Republic would be supported by a moral jurisdiction.

A.G.N. riesuma uno strano testo del maggior Cartwright, il famoso leader radicale inglese : un dialogo politico tra un Italiano, un Spagnolo, un Francese, un Tedesco, un Inglese (1825) dedicato a Miguel Riego, fratello del generale rivoluzionario spagnolo. Tutti i protagonisti ci si trovano d’accordo per vedere in una costituzione che istituisce un regime rappresentativo e l’elezione a tutte le funzioni, l’unica costituzione libera, d’altronde conforme all’ordine divino. Il regime ideale è quello del Commonwealth (Repubblica viene qui tradotta in spagnolo da Salute pubblica). Inoltre, l’Inglese, portavoce di Cartwright, preconizza il ritorno a giochi civici simili ai Giochi Olimpici, affinché in ogni nazione sia sostenuta da una molla morale la Repubblica.

Tous les personnages y tombent d’accord pour voir dans une constitution instituant un régime représentatif et l’élection à toutes les fonctions, la seule constitution libre, conforme d’ailleurs à l’ordre divin. Ce régime idéal, c’est le Commonwealth (Répu¬ blique traduit en espagnol ici par Salut public). De plus, l’Anglais, porte-parole de Cartwright, préconise le retour à des jeux civiques, analogues aux Jeux Olympiques, pour que dans chaque nation la République soit soutenue par un ressort moral !
