The aim of this study was to catalogue castles and churches of the Middle Ages in part of the Agout valley, upstream from Castres, using archaeological and written sources, and to define their ability to structure human habitat. In order to do this, ground prospecting was carried out, as well as an in-depth study of inventoried sites and an analysis of the archives. A geo-historical approach of the field of study allows us to set the stage. Two topics are then tackled: church buildings and parish organization, military buildings and the organization of feudal domains. These two subjects are finally collated to explain in what way human habitat was structured around these two essential focal points.

L’objectif de l’étude (1) était d’inventorier châteaux et églises d’une partie de la vallée de l’Agout, en amont de Castres, au Moyen Âge (2), à partir des sources archéologiques et des sources écrites, et de cerner leur capacité à structurer l’habitat. Pour ce faire, prospection au sol, étude approfondie des sites répertoriés et dépouillement des archives ont été réalisés. Une approche géo-historique du secteur d’étude permet tout d’abord de planter le décor; puis sont abordés deux points: les édifices ecclésiaux et l’organisation paroissiale, les édifices militaires et l’organisation seigneuriale. Enfin, ces deux thèmes sont confrontés afin d’appréhender notamment la structuration de l’habitat par rapport à ces deux pôles potentiels.
