Petronius and “ Sardism”. About the Language of Hermeros in the Cena Trimalchionis – Petronius has gone a long way in the art of the description of his characters and in the study of their psychology. The author of the Satyricon uses various means to characterize the figures he stages : vocabulary, morphology, syntax, code-switching, rhetoric and perhaps also pronunciation. In the speeches of the freedmen appearing in the Cena Trimalchionis, Petronius adapts very carefully the formation and the order of the words as well as the syntax to the personality of the speaker. These elements contribute to transforming the language of the Greco-Oriental freedmen – in particular that of Hermeros – as one of the few examples of a linguistic and cultural mixing (a sort of pidgin) that we can consider as close to the definition given by Quintilian of “ sardism” (dialectal mixing). This article aims to show how Petronius has adapted this theory to the language of one of the freedmen of the Cena Trimalchionis, Hermeros, to which he ascribes a large number of Greek words and hybrid formations.

Pétrone a poussé très loin l’art de la description des personnages et l’étude de leur psychologie. L’auteur du Satyricon utilise divers moyens pour arriver à caractériser les figures qu’il met en scène : vocabulaire, morphologie, syntaxe, code-switching, rhétorique et, peut-être même, prononciation. Dans les discours prêtés aux affranchis de la Cena Trimalchionis, Pétrone a soin d’adapter la formation et l’ordre des mots ainsi que la syntaxe à la personnalité du locuteur. Ces éléments font en sorte que la langue de ces affranchis gréco-orientaux – en particulier celle d’Herméros – apparaît comme l’un des rares exemples de métissage linguistique (une sorte de sabir) et culturel que l’on peut rapprocher de la définition que donne Quintilien du « sardisme » (mélange dialectal). Le présent article étudie comment Pétrone a adapté cette théorie à la langue de l’un des affranchis de la Cena Trimalchionis, Herméros, à qui il prête un nombre élevé de mots grecs et de créations hybrides.
