Interprétation des timbres amphoriques « à la roue » d'Akanthos

Τα μυστηριώδη σφραγίσματα αμφορέων «με τον τροχό», που χρονολογούνται στο δεύτερο μισό του 4ου αι. π.Χ., έχουν την πρωτότυπη μορφή ενός κύκλου, ο οποίος διαιρείται συνήθως σε 3 ή 4 τομείς, καθένας από τους οποίους περιέχει ένα γράμμα ή ένα μονόγραμμα. Περίπου 2000 δείγματα έχουν περισυλλεγεί, κυρίως στο βόρειο Αιγαίο και στη Μαύρη Θάλασσα. Ενώ αρχικά θεωρήθηκε ότι προέρχονταν από τη Θάσο, αποδόθηκαν στη συνέχεια με βεβαιότητα στην Άκανθο, όταν, τη δεκαετία του 1980, άρχισαν να ανακαλύπτονται εκεί, στη βάση των τειχών, άφθονα υπολείμματα εργαστηρίων κατασκευής αμφορέων (αποθέτες και απορρίμματα κλιβάνων). Πιο πρόσφατα, επετεύχθη η διάκριση και η ερμηνεία των δύο τύπων συντομογραφιών, που συνυπήρχαν σε καθένα από τα σφραγίσματα αυτά: από τη μια μεριά, ένα κύριο όνομα (άρχοντος μάλλον παρά κατασκευαστή;) και από την άλλη η χωρητικότητα (μεταξύ 2 χοών και ενός μετρητού, η οποία σημειωνόταν καμιά φορά με τη μορφή των μονογραμμάτων {ΠΧ} και {ΜΕ}). Η αποκωδικοποίηση αυτή θα χρησιμεύσει αναμφίβολα στη μελέτη των ελληνικών αμφορέων και στη συνέχιση της έρευνας για τη σκοπιμότητα της σφράγισής τους.

The mysterious stamps 'with the wheel ' dating from the second half of the 4th century BC have the original form of a circle divided generally into 3 or 4 sectors, each containing a letter or monogram. About 2,000 examples of these have been retrieved, mainly in the north Mediterranean and the Black Sea. They have been thought to originate from Thasos and have been attributed unquestionably to Akanthos, ever since the discovery in the 1980s of abundant remains of an amphora workshop (scrap heaps and kilns) at the foot of the fortification wall. More recently, it has also proved possible to distinguish and interpret the two types of abbreviation found together on each of the stamps: on the one hand we have a proper name (of the magistrate rather than the maker?) and on the other a capacity (between 2 chous and 1 metrete, sometimes in the form of monograms {ΠΧ} and {ME}). This decipherment will undoubtedly be of some use to the formal study of Greek amphoras and reflection on the finality of their stamping.

Les mystérieux timbres « à la roue », datant de la seconde moitié du IVe siècle av. J.-C., ont la forme originale d'un cercle divisé généralement en 3 ou 4 secteurs qui contenaient chacun une lettre ou un monogramme. On en a recueilli environ 2 000 exemplaires, surtout dans le Nord de la mer Egée et en mer Noire. Considérés comme originaires de Thasos, ils ont été sans conteste rendus à Akanthos, à partir du moment où, dans les années 1980, on a commencé à y trouver, au pied des remparts, d'abondants vestiges d'ateliers amphoriques (dépotoirs de rebuts et fours). Plus récemment, on a réussi également à distinguer et à interpréter les deux types d'abréviations coexistant sur chacun de ces timbres : d'une part, un nom propre (de magistrat plutôt que de fabricant ?) et d'autre part une capacité (entre 2 chous et un métrète, parfois sous la forme des monogrammes {ΠΧ} et {ME}). Ce déchiffrement sera sans doute de quelque utilité dans l'étude formelle des amphores grecques et dans la poursuite de la réflexion sur la finalité de leur timbrage.
