The Jardinets de Hainaut (Small Gardens of Hainault) are heraldic representations of this county that present in different forms : theatrical stagings, poems, engravings, etc. The present article intends to retrace the tradition of these «jardinets» from their beginnings in the 14th-15th century until the end of the Ancien Régime. The very formalised structure of this heraldic and political representation of a principality shall be analysed in order to clearly identify the reasons for which they exist and their meaning. A few characteristic examples of «jardinets» shall then be presented with particular focus on representations of the inaugurations of the counts of Hainault, backed by text editions.

Les jardinets de Hainaut sont des représentations héraldiques de ce comté, qui peuvent se présenter sous différentes formes : mise en scène théâtrale, poème, gravure, etc. Le présent article se propose de retracer la tradition des jardinets depuis leurs origines aux XIVe-XVe siècles jusqu'à la fin de l'Ancien Régime. La structure très codifiée de cette représentation héraldique et politique d'une principauté sera passée au crible, afin d'identifier très clairement sa raison d'être et sa signification. Quelques exemples caractéristiques de jardinets seront ensuite présentés et une attention toute particulière sera accordée aux représentations faites à l'occasion des inaugurations des comtes de Hainaut, édition de textes à l'appui.

De "Henegouwse tuintjes" {jardinets de Hainaut) stellen het bewuste graafschap op heraldische wijze voor. Dergelijke voorstellingen kunnen verscheidene vormen aannemen : toneelmatige enscenering, gedicht, gravure enz. Dit artikel beschrijft de traditie van de "tuintjes", van hun oorsprong tijdens de 14de-15de eeuw tot het einde van het ancien régime. De uiterst gecodificeerde structuur van deze heraldisch-politieke voorstelling van een vorstendom wordt bestudeerd met de bedoeling haar bestaansreden en betekenis te verduidelijken. Vervolgens worden enkele typische voorbeelden besproken. Daarbij wordt speciale aandacht besteed aan voorstellingen van de inhuldiging van de graven van Henegouwen, gecombineerd met tekstuitgaven.
