THE FRENCH BACCALAUREATS AND MILITARY TESTS OF GENERAL MENTAL CAPACITY Summary. — Cognitive performances were evaluated on 100 000 young males who successfully graduated the French exam called « Baccalauréat » (Вас) and were tested by the Military Selection Centers. Scores for mental ability tests are intermediate for those who graduated in technology and professional Bacs compared to the scores obtained by those graduated in scientific and humanities Bacs. Thus, they do not induce a lowering in Вас standard. The increasing number of graduates is a consequence of an easier access to education for the people who are potentially able to graduate and who formerly do not go to school : this people are called « storage of ability ». Surprisingly, tests scores are lower for the Bacs with a majority of females among candidates.

. — Cette étude porte sur les performances cognitives de plus de 100 000 bacheliers de sexe masculin, évalués à l'aide d'une batterie de trois tests, utilisés par les centres de sélection militaire. Les performances des bacheliers technologiques et professionnels sont intermédiaires entre celles des bacheliers littéraires et des bacheliers scientifiques et ne traduisent donc pas une baisse du niveau du bac. L'accroissement du nombre de bacheliers s'effectue grâce à l'appoint de sujets qui, autrefois, ne pouvaient pas faire d'études secondaires tout en ayant les aptitudes suffisantes pour passer le baccalauréat. C'est la réserve d'aptitude. Enfin les bacs où l'on trouve les moins bonnes notes de tests sont curieusement ceux où les jeunes filles sont majoritaires parmi les candidats.
