Structures comparées des camps de plein-air magdaléniens et mésolithiques dans le nord de la France

The structures of 48 Mesolithic camps which were excavated by the authors on 9 open-air sites on siliceous ground ( 1 7 of which were completely utiliza- ble) are compared with the structures of 4 Magdalenian sites in the Paris Basin, made up of several dozen recognizable camps. The Magdalenian base camps are much larger (70 to 300 m2, versus 20 to 60 m2 for the Mesolithic ones), they include heaps of raw chipping waste and diversified working positions; the flints are distributed unevenly, whereas they are distributed evenly in the Mesolithic camps. The size of the groups was thus larger during the Magdalenian, and there was a division of labour. On the Magdalenian sites, the hearths were in the middle of the camps; they were outside and leeward in the Mesolithic camps. The Magdalenian working places were very close, the tool distribution was quite uneven, near the hearths; the Mesolithic tools were distributed randomly throughout the inner area of the camp, but not generally near the hearth; there were no fixed working positions. Magdalenian knapping was apparently by " specialists " and carried out from start to finish on one spot; only a small part of the chipping products ("always less than 10 % ") was used. Mesolithic knapping was more flexible, often stopped and resumed by different persons in different parts of the camp. 30 to 50 % of the Mesolithic chipping products more than 2 cm long have conspicuous use wear, but 80 % are found broken, so we can presume that they were used. The Magdalenian tool ratio was variable, depending on the logistic exploitation of the terrain; the Mesolithic one was more constant, because of the residential mobility.

Les structures de 48 camps mésolithiques fouillés par les auteurs dans 9 sites de plein-air sur terrains siliceux (dont 17 camps élémentaires totalement utilisables, tous simples) sont comparées à celles de 4 sites magdaléniens du Bassin parisien comportant plusieurs dizaines de camps complexes identifiables. Les camps de base magdaléniens sont beaucoup plus grands (70 à 300 m2 contre 20 à 60 m2 pour le Mésolithique), ils comportent des amas de débitage brut et des postes de travail diversifiés, la dispersion des silex y est très inégale, elle est uniforme dans les camps mésolithiques. Les effectifs des bandes sont donc plus forts au Magdalénien, avec division du travail. Les foyers sont centraux au Magdalénien, extérieurs et sous le vent au Mésolithique. Les lieux d'activité sont très concentrés au Magdalénien, la répartition des outils y est très inégale, proche du foyer, au Mésolithique les outils sont distribués aléatoirement sur tout l'espace interne du camp, évitant les abords du foyer, il n'y a pas de postes de travail fixes. Le débitage magdalénien est très rigide, fait par des spécialistes " de bout en bout sans bouger", on n'en utilise qu'une faible proportion ("toujours inférieure à 10 % "). Au Mésolithique il est plus souple, souvent arrêté et repris par diverses personnes en divers endroits du camp ou ailleurs, plus de 80 % ont été employés. La proportion d'outils est au Magdalénien variable, en fonction de l 'exploitation logistique du terrain, elle est au Mésolithique plus constante du fait de la mobilité résidentielle.
