Les occupations du site de terrasse de L’Euze à Bagnols-sur-Cèze (Gard) du Néolithique final au Bronze final 1

After a positive diagnosis, a preventive archaeological operation was carried out on the site of L’Euze (Bagnols-sur-Cèze, Gard) in 2002. This excavation has revealed several occupations extending from the end of the Neolithic to the modern period. In this paper, only the occupations from the final Neolithic, the start of the Early Bronze Age and the beginning of the Late Bronze Age will be considered. The earliest occupation is represented by three structures that have yielded few vestiges, dated to the 3rd millennium BC. The early Bronze Age occupation is represented by four structures, with few artefacts. They are dated to the end of the «Barbelé » phase (1930-1880 BC). Finally, the Late Bronze Age I occupation is quantitatively the most important in terms of artefacts (ceramics, flint flakes, querns, bronze arrowhead and chisel). They were found in six pits. The ceramics indicate that the occupation took place during the earliest phase of the Late Bronze Age (two dates : 1410-1320 BC and 1375-1260 BC), during which this decoration is rare. This type of decor essentially covers the great delta of the Rhône and its fringe with connections with Provence, eastern Languedoc and the lower Rhône valley. The general cultural context is southern and, within it, the regional component prevails, covering the great Rhône delta. Others areas like Provence, the Isère and Maurienne valleys, north-western Italy and Tessin also provide more modest contributions. The Late Bronze Age pits have also yielded several domestic animals, in connection. Their status is indeterminate. This abundant series fills a gap in the Rhône Basin area and gives L’Euze the status of reference site in a region that is poor in open-air settlements for this period. Over the course of the centuries, there was a general trend towards spatial concentration of the structures. The configuration of the structures at L’Euze during the Late Bronze Age is close to those known in the Rhône valley for the Early and Late Bronze Ages.

À la suite d’un diagnostic positif, une opération archéologique préventive a été menée en 2002 sur le site de L’Euze à Bagnols-sur-Cèze (Gard). Cette fouille a révélé plusieurs occupations échelonnées de la fin du Néolithique à l’époque moderne. Dans le cadre de cet article, seules seront traitées les occupations du Néolithique final, du début du Bronze ancien et du début du Bronze final. L’occupation la plus ancienne est représentée par trois structures, qui ont livré peu de mobilier, daté du 3e millénaire avant notre ère. L’occupation du Bronze ancien représentée par quatre structures, également peu riches en mobilier, est datée de la fin de la phase barbelée (1930-1880 avant notre ère). Enfin, l’occupation du Bronze final 1 est quantitativement la plus importante en termes de mobilier issu de six fosses. La céramique indique que l’occupation se situe dans la phase la plus ancienne du Bronze final (deux dates : 1410-1320 av. J.-C. et 1375-1260 av. J.-C.). L’ambiance culturelle générale est méridionale et, parmi elle, la composante régionale est dominante. Les fosses du Bronze final ont également livré plusieurs animaux domestiques déposés en connexion dont le statut n’est pas déterminé. Cette abondante série comble une lacune dans le bassin rhodanien et confère un statut de site de référence à L’Euze dans une région pauvre en ensembles de plein air de cette période.
