Les Mendiants, conservateurs et passeurs de la mémoire ruthénoise

Even if the historiography of the Rouergue area has rarely focused on its Mendicant friars, either Dominican or Franciscan, they nevertheless played an important religious and social part in Rodez all through the Middle Ages. Moreover, they proved to have been major players in the building of a local identity. The reinforcing of the sense of belonging to the same city was developed — whether or not consciously — by the Mendicants, by representing actual bearings (not only architectural but also spiritual) for individuals, their families and their communities (Bourg or City of Rodez, each of the parts of the town having its own consulate). By thus becoming the curators of the history of the different groups of the society, notably thanks to the space they were given among all the monas¬ teries, the friars also developed a personal and selective memory, focusing on the family of the Counts of Armagnac and, by doing so, handed down the history of the town of Rodez which best suited them.

Si l’historiographie rouergate n’a fait que très peu de place à ses frères mendiants, tant dominicains que franciscains, il n’en demeure pas moins que ceux-ci ont joué un rôle religieux et social important à Rodez tout au long du Moyen-Age et se sont révélés des acteurs majeurs dans la constitution d’une identité ruthénoise. Ce renforcement du sentiment d’appartenance à une même ville, les Mendiants l’ont développé -volontairement ou non -en se constituant comme véritables repères non seulement topographiques mais également spirituels, pour l’individu, sa famille, et la communauté à laquelle ils se rattachent (Bourg ou Cité de Rodez, chacune de ces parties de la ville ayant son consulat). Devenant ainsi les conservateurs de la mémoire des différents acteurs de la société, notamment par la place qui leur est laissée dans l’espace conventuel, les frères ont d’autre part développé une mémoire particulière et sélective, tournée vers la famille des comtes d’Armagnac, s’inscrivant ainsi comme les passeurs d’une mémoire ruthénoise tout à leur avantage.
