Johannes van Vloten (1818-1883) war ein niederländischer Gelehrter und Spezialist für die Literatur des Mittel liters. Nachdem er sein Theologiestudium absolviert und seine Doktorthese verteidigt hatte, tritt er sein Pastorat nicht an, stellt sich gegen die protestantische Orthodoxie und wirft sich zum Verteidiger des Freidenkertums auf. Er begründet seine naturalistische Philosophie auf den spinozaischen Begriff Deus sive Natura und bemüht sich, eine Verbindung zwischen dem Denken Spinozas und den Naturwissenschaften seinerzeit (Moleschott, Darwin) hcrzustellen. Er rief eine Renaissance des Spinozismus in den Niederlanden ins Leben, vor allem durch ungefähr sechzig Veröffentlichungen über Spinoza und dessen Philosophie. Die erste Ausgabe des Court Traité (der von ihm entdeckt wurde) und (in Zusammenarbeit mit J.P.N. Land) die lateinische Ausgabe der Opera von Spinoza (1882) gehören zu den international bekanntesten Publikationen.

Johannes van Vloten (1818-1883) was an erudite Dutchman who specialised in medieval literature. After finishing his studies in theology and completing his doctoral thesis he gave up the idea of becoming a pastor to oppose protestant orthodoxy, and style himself as a defender of free-thinking. His naturalist philosophy was based on the Spinozist concept of 'Deus sive Natura' in which he endeavoured to establish a link between Spinoza’s ideas and contemporary natural science (Molescott and Darwin). He encouraged a renaissance of Spinozism in Holland, principally by means of sixty or so publications about Spinoza and his thought. Internationally, the best known of these are the first edition of the ’ Short Treatise ' (which was discovered by van Vloten) and the latin edition of Spinoza’s 'Opera' (in collaboration with J.P.N. Land).

Il fonde sa philosophie naturaliste sur le concept spinozien Deus sive Natura et s’efforce d’établir un lien entre les idées de Spinoza et les sciences naturelles de son temps (Moleschott, Darwin). Il fut le promoteur d’une renaissance du Spinozisme aux Pays-Bas, avant tout par une soixantaine de publications sur Spinoza et sa pensée. Ses publications les plus connues au niveau international sont la première édition du Court Traité (découvert par lui) et (en collaboration avec J. P. N. Land) l’édition latine des Opéra de Spinoza (1882).
