Summary : Duong Lam, a Commune in the Red RiverDelta, North Vietnam. The creation by the revolutionary regime of new communes to replace the old townships has caused a real territorial and administrative upheaval : all the political, economic and cultural powers, without omitting the military, are now situated in the communes (the territories of which are two to three times smaller than was the case in the old townships) to the disadvantage of the villages, stripped, because of this fact, of all their traditional strustures and activities. Apart from this change of township to commune, the article gives the organization of the housing and village space in the commune of Duong Lam, which, after forty years of existence, has forged for itself an identity all the more striking in that there is a distinct continuity between this commune and the former township of Cam Gia Thinh, of which it is the transformation.

La création par le pouvoir révolutionnaire des nouvelles communes en remplacement des cantons a provoqué un véritable bouleversement territorial et administratif : tous les pouvoirs politique, économique, culturel, voire militaire, se situent désormais au niveau des communes (dont le territoire est deux à trois fois plus petit que celui des anciens cantons) au détriment des villages, privés de ce fait de toutes leurs structures et activités traditionnelles. Outre ce passage du canton à la commune, l'article présente l'organisation de l'habitat et de l'espace villageois dans la commune de Duong Lâm qui s'est forgé après 40 années d'existence une identité d'autant plus forte qu'il existe une nette continuité entre cette commune et l'ancien canton de Cam Gia Thinh dont elle est l'avatar.
