Résumé En

J. Suret-Canale. About Vigne d'Octon: Can 'Anticolonialism' Be Mentioned before 1914 ? In CEA 54 (XIV-2, 1974), H. Brunschwig made the point that the French writer and politician Vigne d'Octon could not be taxed with 'anticolonialism', since this notion is anachronistic when applied to events or doctrines prior to the First World War. J .S.-C. objects that, if the term itself was not in use, and could not, in any case, have been applied to Vigne d'Octon before 1906, there was, nevertheless, a real opposition to the very principle of colonial expansion, which can be defined as anticolonialism, even if it differs from present attitudes and actions. Such were J. S.-C.'s grounds for a theoretical discussion of anachronism in history, using as a typical example the case of atheism.
