Re-writing from the margins: a political reading of Amadís

The instance of «Amadis de Gaule» is considered for a questioning on the role and purpose of glosses in medieval manuscripts. More than a simple description of those, the author proposes an analysis of the concrete, physical connections, between the marginal and the main text. He recognises in this tumultuous exchange of material a process of «creative entropy» and offers a study of the cognitive and political consequences of the latter, in order to emphasise the dialectical power between text and production.

La lecture de l’«Amadis de Gaule» permet ici une interrogation sur le rôle et la fi nalité des gloses dans les manuscrits médiévaux. Plus qu’une simple description de ces dernières, l’auteur propose une analyse des relations concrètes, physiques, entre le texte marginal et le texte central. Il voit en ce tumultueux échange de matériel un véritable processus «d’entropie créative» dont il se propose d’étudier les conséquences politiques afi n de mieux faire ressortir la puissante dialectique entre texte et acte de production.
