The mountain, with its excesses, is often the space for hyperbole. The case of Hannibal's crossing the Alps points to the fact that, in ancient texts, geography, history and mythical imagination are mingled. We can see how the heraclean paradigm (He was the hero who, for the first time, passed over this "barrier forbidden to the mortals") contributes to a good understanding of the waverings of historiography about the way taken by the Barcid to join Italy from Rhodanian Valley.

La montagne, espace extrême est volontiers le domaine de l'hyperbole. L'exemple de la traversée des Alpes par Hannibal montre bien comment, dans les récits des Anciens, se mêlent géographie, histoire et imaginaire mythique, comment le modèle héracléen (celui du héros qui, le premier avait franchi cette "barrière interdite aux mortels") permet, en outre, de mieux comprendre les incertitudes de l'historiographie quant à la voie suivie par le Barcide pour passer de la vallée du Rhône à l'Italie.
