Geneviève Menant-Artigas : Cassandra and Calas ; a new version of Voltaire's letter to d'Alembert. The version of Voltaire's letter to d'Alembert on the Calas affair (29th March 1762) which was published in the English press in July 1762 was denounced by Voltaire as a forgery ; all his editors have reproduced a much milder and shorter letter. The discovery of two unpublished copies of the long version at the Library in Vire (one of which is given here with all the English and French variants) enables us to see how the false letter came about. The first part is a rearrangement of Voltaire's real letter, and the second part is in fact an accompanying commentary, probably by the journalist Jacques Lacombe, which was included by mistake as part of Voltaire's letter.
