Résumé En

The growth of transatlantic trade between Spain and the Americas was severely hit during the 17th Century. After 1700, the Bourbon monarchy attempted to remedy this situation by creating several trading companies and, above all, by putting an end to the monopoly of the port of Cadiz in 1778. This led to a considerable growth of transatlantic trade which benefited several Mediterranean and Atlantic ports. But the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars led to a collapse of the commercial ties between Spain and its colonial American empire, which was about to escape its control completely.
