Résumé En

A study of criticism of religious intolerance made by undisputed Christians in the name of evangelical values is useful in order to counter a manichaean vision of the 18th Century, without denying its tensions. A vigorous denunciation of the cruelty inflicted on Protestants is to be found in the Memoirs of Saint-Simon, a Gallican hostile to the Jesuits who condemned the Inquisition and the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes. Louis Racine, in his poem La Religion, condemned the theologians who justified the Crusades. The wars of religion were also criticised, in the name of cthe spirit of Scripture5 and, from 1760, theologians questioned the intransigence of their 'fanatical' colleagues who conti¬ nued to refuse salvation to virtuous pagans. The issue of cpagan virtue3 was the subject of a long theological debate, whose importance needs to be understood.
