Résumé En

Profit and economic growth. Profit is related to economic growth in two important ways. It provides an incentive for growth and , at the same time, in so far as it is realised, represents a source of the means of financing growth. The author considers what is the nature of profit as an incentive for innovation and managerial efficiency and the degree of incentives of this kind which is desirable. As regards the role of profit as a source of finance for growth, it seems that, in proportion to its size, it is more important than other incomes. Nevertheless, its use depends upon institutional factors. It is necessary to consider also the disadvantages of monopoly, exploitation and excessive profits. But attempts to remedy these defects should not lead to neglect of the fundamental cost element for society of pure profit.
