In this work, we try to define the stereotype notion. In this field, the littérature scrutiny lets appear two important current in the research. Asociological current which seems to be in continuity with the medical using term, dating back XlXth century. In this tradition the stereotype looks like pathological : pathology of the group, but sometimes of the stereotyped peoples. The second current is more experimentalist. It considers that the stereoped peoples are not pathological, the stereotype normaly follow from the way by the people deal with information, for exemple the putting into place of illusory correlation into Hamilton (1981) or perceptive bias from wich Tajfel and al. of Bristol school theorize. .

Dans ce travail, une tentative de définition du concept de stéréotype est proposée. Vexamen de la littérature dans ce domaine laisse apparaître deux courants de recherche. Un courant sociologique, remontant au XIXe siècle, paraît en continuité avec V usage médical du terme. Dans cette tradition le stéréotype a quelque chose de pathologique : pathologie du groupe mais parfois aussi pathologie des individus stéréotypés. Le deuxième courant, plus expérimentaliste, considère que les individus stéréotypés ri ont rien de pathologique. Le stéréotype découle normalement de la façon dont les gens traitent l'information, comme par exemple la mise en place des corrélations illusoires chez Hamilton (1981) ou les biais perceptifs à partir desquels théorisent Tajfel et l'Ecole de Bristol.
