Caroline Lanciano, French-style hypermarkets versus local negotiations in Italy. The hypermarket sector is, in Italy, a model « imported » from France ; it therefore suffers from a time-lag compared with changes observed in France, but it has also reacted to its model according to its own national characteristics. The structuring of the sector in each country is analyzed, as is the change in the workforce and the role of training, management of flexibility, types of negotiations and agreements. This article enables us to distinguish between a « settled » French model, centralized according to companies, whose type of organization is uniform throughout the country, and an Italian type which achieves its dynamism and its cohesion through regional differences, and regulates itself via compromises negotiated with all participants in the sector.
