«Propaganda Through Sight». Kingly Sovereignty and Voting Number Management in the Provincial Travels of Carnot (1888 - 1894) A concrete practice as well as a sociological object to be constructed, the sovereignty journey to the French provinces offers a particularly well-suited vantage point for observing the prescriptive relation of the republican regime toward crowds and voting numbers. The organization of Carnot's travels was based on a combination of different reasons that nevertheless converged in the enormous task of reinforcing the presidential office: justifying a practice inherited from the monarchy by and for the institution of the presidency as well as a way of fighting against Boulanger on his own turf. Thus, the «tour of France» of Carnot, who became a republican fetish during his travels, enables a discussion of certain issues raised by the study of politics-on-show.
