The Upper Senonian rudist carbonate complex which makes up the Merfeg formation at Jebel el Kebar in Central Tunisia, consists of three massive members, locally rich in rudists and corals with which foraminifera and inocerams may be sometimes associated. These members often abruptly changing into intraformational conglomerates are separated by thin layers of argillaceous limestones with benthonic and planktonic foraminifera. The third member, often micritic, is overlain by layers of pink micritic limestone, becoming porcellaneous, with inoceram moulds at the top. The wide, faunal diversification, enables a detailed biozonation to be established based upon different genus and species of rudists, planktonic foraminifera, "large benthic foraminifera", and inocerams. This diversified fauna enables anUpper campanian -Lower maastrichtian age to be ascribeb to the Merfeg formation. On the other hand, the discovery of genus Pironaea as well as other rudist species may indicate an Upper Senonian paleobiogeographic affinity between Tunisia and the Adriatic margins.

Les calcaires à Rudistes du Sénonien supérieur du Jebel el Kébar appartiennent à la formation Merfeg (Khessibi, 1978). Trois membres, localement riches en Rudistes et Polypiers, auxquels peuvent s'associer des Inocérames et des grands Foraminifères, peuvent être distingués. Ils sont séparés par des calcaires argileux riches en Foraminifères planctoniques et Coccolithes. Une biozonation détaillée est ainsi établie permettant d'attribuer un âge campanien supérieur -maastrichtien inférieur à la formation Merfeg. Les espèces de Rudistes, toutes nouvelles pour le Tunisie, montrent des affinités paléobiogéographiques avec celles du Sénonien supérieur des marges adriatiques.
