The Child Labour Law of 1841 is a rare case of state intervention found in French economic liberalism at the first half of the 19th century. The object of this article is to examine the meaning of the law for Alsatian industrialists, who took a leading role in the impetus to the legislation. A peculiarity of the law lies in the fact that a social policy intended to stabilize the formation of the labour force was linked to an interventionalist economic policy intended to establish a just system of competition according to the principles of economic liberalism.

La loi du 22 mars 1841 sur le travail des enfants est un exemple rare d'interventionnisme économique de l'État dans la première moitié du XIXe siècle. Cet article a pour but d'analyser la réglementation du travail des enfants au point de vue des industriels alsaciens, qui ont pris l'initiative dans la proposition de la loi. Ce qui rend cette loi particulière est que la politique sociale menée en vue de stabiliser la formation de la main-d'œuvre a été liée à la politique économique destinée à garantir une concurrence équitable dans le cadre du libéralisme économique.
