The history of the first half of the nineteenth century accounts for the emergence of a different kind of novel in English. A few Catholic writers in search of a new identity claimed to describe the reality of Irish life. John and Michael Banim, Gerald Griffin and William Carleton embody that difficult transitional period. Because of the invaluable and often fascinating description of their age, and in spite of shortcomings and ambiguities, these storytellers may be considered the founders of a national literature.
