Can the application of different methods to new source material help establish a different history of Africa i The discovery in the Dar fur of private archives together with their examination from both historical and anthropological approaches have shed new light on the history of this part of the Sudan and, consequently, on the history of Africa. Attempts to identify a dignitary who appeared for the first time in written documents under the Arabicized name of «Tékényâouy» and the investigation of the state institution of which he was in charge have revealed a particular kind of relationship between the conquered people and their, conquerors : the latter in order to build up their power secured the support of the former by integrating them within the new state structure in prominent but far from supreme positions.

Peut-on renouveler l'histoire de l'Afrique ? Prenant comme exemple l'histoire du Dar For, l'auteur montre comment la découverte de nouvelles sources — dans le cas présent des documents d'archives privées — et l'application conjuguée de la démarche historique et de la démarche ethnologique qui consiste l'une et l'autre à aller à la source de l'information, font avancer l'histoire d'une région et par là même l'histoire du pays tout entier. La recherche de l'identité d'un personnage et de son rôle à l'intérieur d'une institution a permis de préciser les rapports politiques qui, dans ces royaumes sahéliens, s'instaurent le plus souvent entre vainqueurs et vaincus, les premiers s'appuyant sur les seconds pour gouverner en leur déléguant une partie de leur pouvoir.
