In remembrance of the master and friend, this paper recalls the fundamental aspects of Paul Jovet's thinking and work. His unique pedagogical talent was based upon rigourous observation of the plant cover, devoid of preconceived ideas. Beyond highly detailed taxonomical analyses, synecological and then phytogeogra- phical aspects were dealt with following original approaches. The dynamics of both spontaneous and introduced plant species in the Seine River Basin in the heart of the Paris conglomeration (connurbation), was a leit motif in the work of Paul Jovet ever before World War I, taking into consideration, through a refined and comprehensive approach, the mechanisms of human intervention. This concern for knowledge and understanding of the anthropization of habitats marked the ensemble of his work, and in particular in two of his favourite regions in France : the Valois in the east of Paris, and the French Basque country in the Southwest of France. His studies in the field, which he continued up to age 94, remain as essential references of their genre. They have constituted a precious state-of-the-arts for over half a century, and are pionering sources for the conservation and protection of the flora.

A travers le souvenir du maître et de l'ami, nous évoquons ici les aspects fondamentaux de la pensée et de l'œuvre de Paul Jovet. Son rare talent pédagogique reposait sur l'examen rigoureux, sans idée préconçue, du tapis végétal : au delà d'analyses floristiques très détaillées, les aspects synécologiques puis phytogéographiques étaient abordés selon une démarche originale. La dynamique de la flore spontanée et introduite, du bassin de la Seine au cœur de la mégalopole parisienne, fut un domaine de prédilection des travaux de Paul Jovet, notamment par une approche fine et complète des mécanismes de l'action humaine. Cette réflexion sur l'anthropisation des milieux a marqué l'ensemble de son œuvre et en particulier les travaux conduits sur deux régions qu'il affectionna toujours, le Valois et le Pays basque. Constituant de précieux états des lieux sur plus d'un demi-siècle, ses études demeurent une référence essentielle, et sont des sources pionnières pour la préservation de la flore.
