Being an historian of war and a former general in the Athenian army, Thucydides wanted also to show himself a moralist. For him, the use of violence, often alluded to, especially in the sixty examples of the verb βιάζομαι, is, like siege and treason, a normal way of fighting. Nevertheless, many passages suggest that violence is criticized as harmful to the victim without necessarily being useful to its perpetrator.

Historien militaire et ancien stratège, Thucydide se veut aussi moraliste. La violence est, avec le siège ou la trahison, un moyen d’action habituel à la guerre, souvent évoqué, surtout par les soixante exemples du verbe βιάζομαι. Mais un certain nombre de passages suggèrent une condamnation de la violence, nocive à celui qui la subit sans nécessairement profiter à celui qui la pratique.
