The transition between Quaternary and Miocene deposits (marnes de Bresse), at military camp of Chanes, near Béligneux (Ain, France) The building of the Lyon-Geneva motorway ENE of Lyon necessitated the use of fluvio-glacial materials from the 15-20 m wurmian terrace which forms the La Valbonne plain. This work led to the discovery, at a depth of 6 to 8 m of alluvions, of an outcrop of blue marls with lignites containing a few gastropods and rodents teeth of the Upper Miocene. These remains belong to the warm climate fauna also found in other characteristic deposits of the Miocene of the area : Sermenaz, Mollon, Ambérieu. The discovery is interesting for two reasons : (1) it makes it possible to ascertain the presence of only one wurmian fluvio-glacial formation coming from the dismantling and washing of the bottom moraine ; (2) it shows that the continental Upper Miocene, well known from all over the edge of the Dombes plateau, extended far into La Valbonne plain, under a shallow layer of quaternary alluvions. In a previous paper (Vilain et al., 1989) the outcrops of blue marls with lignites in La Valbonne plain were briefly referred to. Today, the study of the remains of rodents and those of a few gastropods, added to the field observations, makes it possible not only to date this outcrop accurately but also to estimate the extension of the blue marls which have already been found to the NE and the South of this site.

La réalisation de l'autoroute Lyon-Genève a nécessité, à 25 km à l'ENE de Lyon, un emprunt de matériaux fluvio-glaciaires de la terrasse wiirmienne de 15-20 m constituant la plaine de La Valbonne. Ces travaux ont mis au jour, sous une épaisseur de 6 à 8 m d'alluvions, un affleurement de marnes bleues à lignites renfermant quelques gastéropodes et des dents de rongeurs du Miocène supérieur. Ces restes appartiennent aux faunes de climat chaud, retrouvées par ailleurs dans d'autres gisements caractéristiques du Miocène de la région : Sermenaz, Mollon, Ambérieu. Cette découverte permet de constater la présence d'une seule formation fluvio-glaciaire würmienne provenant du démantellement et du lavage de la moraine de fond. Elle montre également que le Miocène supérieur continental, bien connu sur toute la côtière de Dombes, est largement étendu dans la plaine de La Valbonne, sous une faible épaisseur d'alluvions quaternaires. L'étude des restes de rongeurs et de quelques gastéropodes, et les observations de terrain, permettent de préciser l'âge de cet affleurement, et d'apprécier l'extension de ces marnes bleues connues au NE et au S de ce lieu.
