The Barbegal roman mills set a palaeoenvironmental and historical problem : why did Romans build an important colony in Aries, and could any agricultural lands lie in places thought to remain wet ? Archeological and geomorphological data disagree with the former reconstruction of the antique landscape, and show the fluctuations in wetland surfaces since 3000 years. High water-levels of the protohistoric, middle age and modern periods contrast with the partial withdrawal of marshes during the roman period. We discuss the responsibility of natural climatic history versus human tranformations.

L'installation d'une colonie romaine à Arles soulève un problème historique et paléoenvironnemental (localisation des terres agricoles dans un milieu réputé submergé). La confrontation des données archéologiques et géomorphologiques remet en cause l'image traditionnelle du paysage antique dans la basse vallée du Rhône et montre l'extension variable des zones inondées depuis 3000 ans. La période romaine correspond à un recul partiel des marécages en contraste avec les hauts niveaux des périodes protohistorique, médiévale et moderne. La question posée est celle du rôle respectif de l'histoire naturelle, en particulier climatique, et des aménagements humains.
