Après avoir rappelé le point de vue polycycliste de Demangeon et en avoir souligné le caractère ultradavisien, les auteurs suggèrent de voir dans les plateaux limousins une Piedmontfläche mésonummulitique (Eocène supérieur - Oligocène inférieur). En relation probable avec la phase pyrénéenne de l'orogénie alpine, le Limousin aurait été affecté par un bombement (Aufwölbung, updoming) assez brusque et assez ample pour provoquer une incision franche des rivières sur les flancs du dôme très surbaissé né de la déformation. Les circonstances bioclimatiques de la morphogenèse s'y prêtant, des pediments seraient alors apparu au pourtour de la Montagne limousine, tandis que les produits de la pédimentation — Sidéro- lithique de transport — s'accumulaient sous forme de piedmonts alluviaux dans les champs d'épandage périphériques (du Berry au Périgord et au Quercy). Les hautes terres de la Montagne procéderaient, quant à elles, d'un réaménagement acyclique de la pédiplaine posthercynienne. Le contenu du géomorphotype limousin doit donc être révisé en conséquence. Mais son intérêt ne s'en trouve nullement diminué puisque, de la Bretagne péninsulaire à la Bohême, les reliefs étages associés à divers massifs anciens de l'Europe occidentale et centrale paraissent être issus de la même histoire. Mieux, entre la solution ultradavisienne de A. Demangeon et la solution antidavisienne de W. Penck, il y a place pour une solution de synthèse plus satisfaisante au problème des Piedmonttrepen.
