In the geographical literature, the canal of Saimaa is one of the best kept secrets of economic life in Finland, whereas it plays a major role in the regional dis- enclavement of the South-Eastern part of the country. The paper reviews its current status of its infrastructure and traffic, with an emphasis upon technical and climatical constraints, as well as upon the geographical structure of the flows.

Le canal de Saimaa est fondamental pour le désenclavement de la Finlande lacustre du Sud-Est. De statut original et de remise en service récente, ce canal connaît un trafic en pleine expansion malgré des contraintes de gabarit et les obligations de la fermeture hivernale, grâce surtout aux produits forestiers qui assuraient les deux tiers son activité en 1987.
