Bladelet Production in the Aurignacian of Hayonim Cave, Israel

The Aurignacian is an archaeological entity defined by the co-occurrence of types of artifacts. Technological analysis of three French Aurignacian assemblages has demonstrated that a number of these discreet artifact types are part of a single system of bladelet manufacture. This paper presents a technological analysis of bladelet production of the Aurignacian site of Hayonim Cave, Israel, that demonstrates an overall similarity to bladelet production in the Aiirignacian of France. These results are interpreted as supporting the position that the Aurignacian represents a technological system that was shared across a wide geographical and temporal range.

L 'Aurignacien est une entité archéologique définie par la co-existence de différents artefacts. L 'analyse technologique de trois assemblages aurignaciens de France a montré qu'un certain nombre de types particuliers d'artefacts font partie d'un seul et même système de production de lamelles. Cet article présente une analyse technologique de la production de lamelles sur le site aurignacien de la grotte d Hayonim., Israël, qui démontre une similitude avec les techniques employées pour la production de lamelles dans l'Aurignacien de France. Ces résultats confortent l'hypothèse selon laquelle l'Aurignacien représente un système technologique recouvrant une grande aire géographique et une longue période.
