In the Narbonnaise, "invocations to princes" whether they corne from the city or from private citizens are addressed to Augustus or his co-regent until the middle of the first century A.D. After that time, later than in the three Gauls, the association with a Gallic god appears, or with a Roman god linked to a Gallic one. From the time of Hadrian it had been an imperial numen: the new worship is reinforced, favoured by the former gods, and its purpose is rather the imperial status than the person entitled to the office. There are few signs of a hierarchical control by the city and the pagus as it existed in the three Gauls: it was less necessary in the Narbonnaise which had been romanized earlier.

En Narbonnaise les « invocations aux princes » d'origine municipale ou privée s'adressent à « l'Auguste ou à son corégent » jusqu'au milieu du Ier siècle ap. J.-C. ; au-delà apparaît, plus tard que dans les Trois Gaules, l'association à un dieu gaulois (ou à un dieu romain assimilé à un dieu gaulois). A partir d'Hadrien il s'agit du numen impérial : le nouveau culte est conforté grâce aux anciens dieux et a pour objet la fonction impériale plus que son titulaire. Peu d'indices d'un contrôle hiérarchique (par la cité et le pagus) comme dans les Trois Gaules : ce devait être moins nécessaire dans la Narbonnaise plus précocement romanisée.
