History Meets Archaeology: the Historical Use of Images. A Survey

The relationship between contemporary historians, archaeologists and visual sources remains strained. Because of the lack of a proper visual theory and methodology, the potential of iconographical sources still is rarely fully exploited. An interdisciplinary approach between history and archaeology, along with the expertise of other disciplines such as art history, anthropology, sociology, communication sciences and linguistics, is badly needed in order to provide scholars with an accessible approach. However, as the two cases of recent historical and archaeological literature discussed in the introduction show, the inclusion of visual material in past and current research is not yet self-evident.

Bien que, ces dernières années, la perspective historique et archéologique manifeste un regain d’attention (théorique) pour l’emploi de matériel visuel, une lacune continue à se faire jour sur le plan de la recherche qui s’appuie sur des sources iconographiques. Une approche interdisciplinaire est plus que jamais nécessaire pour développer une méthode accessible. Un dialogue s’impose entre l’histoire et l’archéologie d’une part, et l’histoire de l’art, l’anthropologie, la sociologie, les sciences de communication et la linguistique d’autre part. Une coopération primordiale, qui, comme le démontre l’introduction, n’est visiblement pas évidente.

De verhouding tussen enerzijds contemporanisten en archeologen en anderzijds visuele bronnen is nog altijd gespannen. Iconografisch materiaal wordt nog altijd niet naar waarde geschat, onder meer door een gebrek aan een goed onderbouwde visuele theorie en methodologie. Meer dan ooit is een interdisciplinaire benadering nodig om een toegankelijke methode op punt te stellen. Daarbij dienen geschiedenis en archeologie in dialoog te treden met andere sociale disciplines zoals kunstwetenschappen, antropologie, sociologie, communicatiewetenschappen en taalkunde. Ondanks het feit dat deze samenwerking broodnodig is om visuele bronnen in hedendaags onderzoek op te nemen, blijkt uit dit historisch en archeologisch literatuuroverzicht dat dit niet vanzelfsprekend is.
