Obedience to the Bishop, Apostolic Protection and Appeal to Rome: The Changing Representation of Abbot Theodoric I of St-Hubert (1055-1086) Against the Backdrop of the Investiture Conflict in the Diocese of Liège

This article demonstrates how the image of Abbot Theodoric I of St-Hubert (1055-1086) was drastically reshaped against the backdrop of the Investiture Conflict to suit contemporary concerns about the relation between the abbey of St-Hubert, the bishop of Liège as its temporal and spiritual lord, and the reform papacy. The Vita Theoderici (c. 1086-1091) and the Chronicle of St-Hubert (also known as the Cantatorium) of Lambert the Younger (c. 1106) pay substantial attention to the obtainment by Abbot Theodoric I of a bull of protection from Gregory VII in 1074 and its tumultuous reception in Liège. However, a comparison of the description of this important episode shows how the abbot’s representation changed from a competent administrator, anxious about the safety of the abbey’s domains but respectful of episcopal rights, to a staunch advocate of the reform program and of papal judicial supremacy. Thus, the shift in the abbot’s representation, which so far has gone unnoticed in previous scholarship, mirrors the dramatic change in the relationship between the abbey in the Ardennes and the bishop of Liège in the 1090s.

Obéissance à l’évêque, protection apostolique et appel à Rome : le remaniement de l’image de l’abbé Thierry Ier de Saint-Hubert (1055-1086) dans le contexte de la Querelle des Investitures au diocèse de Liège Cet article démontre que les discussions sur les relations entre l’abbaye de Saint-Hubert, l’évêque de Liège et la papauté réformatrice dans le contexte de la Querelle des Investitures ont conduit à un profond remaniement de l’image de l’abbé Thierry Ier de Saint-Hubert (1055-1086). La Vita Theoderici (env. 1086-1091) comme la Chronique de Saint-Hubert (également appelée Cantatorium ) de Lambert le Jeune (env. 1106) consacrent une place importante à l’obtention par l’abbé d’une bulle de protection de Grégoire VII en 1074 et à la réception tumultueuse de ce document à Liège. Il suffit de comparer la manière dont cet épisode a été décrit dans les deux sources pour observer le changement de présentation de l’abbé : d’administrateur compétent soucieux de la sécurité du patrimoine de Saint-Hubert mais pleinement respectueux des droits épiscopaux à fervent défenseur de la réforme de l’Église et de la suprématie juridique papale. Ce changement, passé inaperçu dans les recherches historiques, reflète l’évolution dramatique qu’a connue la relation entre Saint-Hubert et l’évêque de Liège durant la dernière décennie du XIe siècle.

Zowel in de Vita Theoderici (ca. 1086-1091) als in de Kroniek van Saint-Hubert (ook Cantatorium genoemd) van Lambert de Jonge (ca. 1106) wordt ruime aandacht besteed aan het verkrijgen door deze abt van een bul van Gregorius VII in 1074 en aan de tumultueuze ontvangst van dit document in Luik. Een vergelijking van de wijze waarop deze episode in beide bronnen beschreven wordt, toont aan hoe de voorstelling van de abt wijzigde van een competente administrator, bekommerd om de veiligheid van het patrimonium van Saint-Hubert maar vol eerbied voor de rechten die de bisschop behield als heer van het eigenklooster, tot een vurige verdediger van de Kerkhervorming en van pauselijke juridische suprematie. Deze verandering bleef vooralsnog onopgemerkt in het historisch onderzoek en weerspiegelt de dramatische wijziging die de verhouding tussen Saint-Hubert en de bisschop van Luik onderging in het laatste decennium van de elfde eeuw.
