Pillar and issue of a “ shared” colonial history and memory between Belgium, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda and Burundi, the Belgian public colonial archives – known as the “ Africa Archives” – have for several decades now been an invaluable and indispensable material for the scientific community and its cohort of Belgian and foreign Africanists. Paradoxically, these 9,5 linear kilometres of archives that are being transferred to the State Archives are still unknown as to their components and the processes of production, conservation and opening up to research. However, only an in-depth knowledge of the genealogy of these “ Africa Archives” will ensure a better understanding and nuanced objectification of the complex issues, expectations and challenges surrounding this archival heritage, whether in terms of good conservation and accessibility or in terms of restitution or “ shared heritage”.

Pilier et enjeu d’une histoire et d’une mémoire coloniales «en partage » entre la Belgique, la République démocratique du Congo, le Rwanda et le Burundi, les archives coloniales publiques belges – dites «Archives africaines » – constituent depuis plusieurs décennies déjà un matériau inestimable et incontournable pour la communauté scientifique et sa cohorte d’africanistes belges et étrangers. Paradoxalement, ces quelque 9,5 kilomètres linéaires d’archives en cours de transfert vers les Archives de l’État sont encore méconnus quant à leurs composantes et aux processus de production, de conservation et d’ouverture à la recherche. Or, seule une connaissance approfondie de la généalogie des «archives africaines » peut assurer une compréhension nuancée des enjeux, attentes et défis complexes autour de ce patrimoine archivistique autant en termes de bonne conservation et d’accessibilité que de restitution ou de «patrimoine partagé » .

Het Belgisch koloniaal overheidsarchief -bekend als het “ Afrika-archief” -is tegelijk een pijler en een inzet van een “ gemeenschappelijke” koloniale geschiedenis en nagedachtenis voor België, de Democratische Republiek Congo, Rwanda en Burundi. Sinds enkele decennia vormt het een onschatbaar en onmisbaar materiaal voor het wetenschappelijk onderzoek en menige Belgische en buitenlandse afrikanisten. Paradoxaal genoeg blijven deze 9,5 strekkende kilometer archieven, die aan het Rijksarchief worden overgedragen, nog steeds onbekend wat betreft hun indeling en de manier waarop ze werden verzameld, bewaard en beschikbaar gesteld. Slechts een grondige kennis van de genealogie van het “ Afrika archief” kan leiden tot een beter begrip en een genuanceerde objectivering van de complexe vraagstukken, verwachtingen en uitdagingen rond dit archieferfgoed, zowel op het vlak van goede bewaring en toegankelijkheid als op het vlak van restitutie of “ gedeeld erfgoed”.
