The intellectual group briefly coalescing around The Seven Arts in 1916-17 discussed many of the central issues if its age, such as America's entry into the war, the state of American culture, the cultural implications of America's immigrant history, cultural renewal through technical inventions like film and photography. This article focusses on the point of intersection of the latter two lines of argument where photography meets the immigrant.

Le groupe d'intellectuels brièvement rassemblé autour de la revue Seven Arts en 1916-17 se pencha sur de nombreuses questions centrales à leur temps : entrée en guerre des Etats-Unis, état de la culture américaine, implications culturelles de l'histoire de l'immigration aux Etats-Unis, renouveau culturel dû à des inventions comme le cinéma et la photo. Cet article étudie le point où ces deux dernières préoccupations — photo et immigration — se recoupent.
