E. Jacob : Edouard Reuss, an independent theologian. Of all the theologians of the so-called Strasbourg School (1820-1870), Edouard Reuss had the longest and most productive career. Although influenced by the rationalism dominant in the early nineteenth century, he freed himself from all dogmatism to conceive a Biblical theology founded on free historical research and literary criticism. Lecturing on Old and New Testaments, he produced a synthesis of his works in the translation of the Bible into French with introductions and notes. The aura of his teaching and personality made him many friends among Protestants in Alsace who have passed on his imprint to Church and University.

Parmi les théologiens de l'École dite de Strasbourg (1820-1870), Édouard Reuss a eu la carrière la plus longue et la plus productive. Marqué parle courant rationaliste dominant au début du 19e siècle, il s'est cependant éloigné de tout dogmatisme pour élaborer une théologie biblique fondée sur la libre recherche historique et la critique littéraire. Enseignant l'Ancien Testament et le Nouveau Testament, il a donné une synthèse de son œuvre dans la Traduction de la Bible en français avec introductions et notes. Le prestige de son enseignement et de sa personne lui a gagné de nombreux amis au sein du protestantisme alsacien qui ont marqué de son esprit l'Église et l'Université.
