James M. Robinson : The incipit of the Sayings Gospel Q. The Q fragments "John ... all the region of the Jordan ...he said to the crowds coming for his baptism : You brood of vipers !" have already been ascribed by the International Q Project (IQP) to the beginning of Q. Since the text of Q could hardly have begun so abruptly with John, these fragments must not only have been in a coherent context, but must also have been preceded by an incipit with some reference to "Jesus", less certainly also to "Sayings" (οί λόγοι, not τά λόγια !). Efforts to derive a more complete and coherent incipit based on a conjectural use by Mark of Q are too speculative to gain acceptance. The full text of the incipit must be considered lost.

Les fragments de Q «Jean... toute la région du Jourdain... Il dit aux foules venant pour son baptême : Race de vipères !» ont déjà été assignés par l'International Q Project (IQP) au début de Q. Comme le texte de Q peut difficilement avoir commencé aussi abruptement avec Jean, ces fragments doivent non seulement avoir figuré dans un contexte cohérent mais doivent aussi avoir été précédés par un incipit contenant une référence à Jésus et, de manière moins certaine, aux «Dits» (et non pas !). Les essais de reconstitution d'un incipit plus complet et plus cohérent fondés sur un usage conjectural de Q par Marc sont trop spéculatifs pour être acceptés. Le texte complet de l'incipit doit être tenu pour perdu.
