Volker Leppin’s book on Martin Luther is the first important biography after the studies around the 1983 jubilee (by M. Brecht, H. A. Oberman, M. Lienhard, and R. Schwarz), and gives prominence to the medieval roots of his thought (Tauler’s mysticism, Johann Staupitz). Leppin deliberately concentrates on the «young » Luther (1505-1520) and on the question of the «reforming turning point » , which induces him to minimize the importance of the years 1525-1546, which are considered as a period of Luther’s decline.

Première biographie importante depuis les études autour du jubilé de 1983 (M. Brecht, H. A. Oberman, M. Lienhard et R. Schwarz), le Martin Luther de Volker Leppin s’attache à mettre en évidence les racines médiévales de la pensée du Réformateur (la mystique de Tauler, Johann Staupitz). Leppin se concentre à dessein sur le «jeune » Luther (1505-1520) et sur la question du «tournant réformateur » , ce qui l’amène à minimiser l’importance des années 1525-1546, tenues pour une période de déclin de Luther.
