« Religio/superstitio » : the history of a subversion and reversion. This study is a warning as well as a reminder about the epistemological conditions in which reference is usually made to terms such as "religio" or "superstitio". It then aims at giving prominence to the main periods of the semantic history of this pair of words in Ancient and Christian latinity by showing how, on the one hand, though initially belonging to unrelated semantic fields, both terms gradually evolved towards an oppositional pair and, on the other, how Latin-speaking Christians fundamentally altered and renewed their significance by switching their referents and reversing their meaning.

Cette étude rappelle tout d'abord, sous forme de mise en garde, les conditions épistémologiques selon lesquelles on fait habituellement référence à des termes comme "religio" ou "superstitio". Elle propose ensuite de mettre en évidence les principaux moments de l'histoire sémantique de ce couple au cours de la latinité antique et chrétienne, en montrant, d'une part, que ces deux termes qui, au départ, relevaient de champs sémantiques sans aucun lien commun, en sont progressivement venus à former un couple oppositionnel et, d'autre part, comment les chrétiens d'expression latine, en en permuttant les référents et en en réinvestissant la signification, en ont subverti et renouvelé profondément la portée.
