SUMMARY. — Thomas Young's autobiographical sketch that Victor L. Hilts has rescued from oblivion by bringing it out in 1978, has the peculiar quality of not only going over the life of a man who, in the scientific world at the beginning of the nineteenth century, played a prominent part, but also of revealing the eclectism of what he used to care about (medicine, but also optics, mechanics, languages) and through his refusal to « specialize » the way he conceived the scientific work. This document is still valuable for another reason : it displays the relations he had with the French scientific world.

RESUME. — L'essai autobiographique de Thomas Young, que Victor L. Hilts a tiré de l'oubli en le publiant au cours de l'année 1978, a le mérite non seulement de retracer la vie d'un homme qui occupe, dans la science du début du XIXe siècle, une place de premier plan, mais encore de révéler l'éclectisme de ses préoccupations (la médecine, mais aussi l'optique, la mécanique, les langues) et, à travers son refus de la « spécialisation », la nature de ses conceptions du travail scientifique. Ce document est encore précieux à un autre titre : il témoigne des relations que Young a entretenues avec le monde scientifique français.
