A Note on Two Astrological Fortune-telling Tables

In 1976 Paul Kunitzsch published the text of an important bilingual Arabic-Latin fortune-telling table, arranged in the form of a grid, and immediately preceding Latin astronomical tables in two twelfth-century manuscripts. A similar table, this time not of Arabic origin, is associated with other astronomical tables of the twelfth century. This is the Tabula prenostica Salomonis, which correlates unexpected happenings with the signs of the zodiac. In the sixteenth century a much expanded version of the latter table appears with a preface by the German alchemist Heinrich Khunrath. The article discusses the contents of these tables and proposes some alternative interpretations to the table published by Kunitzsch.

En 1976, Paul Kunitzsch publia le texte d'une importante table de divination bilingue en arabe et en latin, disposée sous la forme d'une grille, et précédant immédiatement des tables astronomiques latines dans deux manuscrits du XIIe siècle. Une table semblable, mais non d'origine arabe, est associée à d'autres tables astronomiques du XIIe siècle. C'est la Tabula prenostica Salomonis, qui établit une corrélation entre des événements inattendus et les signes du zodiaque. Au XVIe siècle, une version très développée de cette dernière apparaît accompagnée d'une préface de l'alchimiste allemand Heinrich Khunrath. L'article discute le contenu de ces tables et propose quelques interprétations des termes contenus dans les tables publiées par Kunitzsch.
