The vivacity of social Catholicism in the Nord — a region of high working- class concentration — relies on a numerous and active Franciscan Third- Order, on the Lille Catholic Faculties and on a clergy numerous and particularly open to these matters. The French Youth Catholic Association has also trained an elite among the youth, by introducing them to both industrial and agricultural trade-unionism : activity in the field of popular education and trade-unionism. After 1918, the C.F.T.C. and the J.O.C. took further this early XXth century social Catholicism.

La vitalité du catholicisme social dans le Nord — région à forte concentration ouvrière — s'appuie sur un Tiers-Ordre franciscain nombreux et actif, sur les Facultés catholiques de Lille et sur un clergé abondant et ouvert tout particulièrement à ces questions. L'Association catholique de la Jeunesse française a formé également une élite parmi les jeunes, en les initiant au syndicalisme tant ouvrier qu'agricole ; le Sillon, avec Victor Diligent, a déployé une grande activité dans le domaine de l'éducation populaire et du syndicalisme. Après 1918, la C.F.T.C. et la J.O.C. prolongent ce catholicisme social du début du XXe siècle.

De vitaliteit van het sociale katholicisme in het Noorden — een streek met een grote arbeiderconcentratie — steunt op een talrijke en aktieve franciska- ner Derde Orde, op de Katholieke Faculteiten te Rijsel en op een talrijke clerus die oog en oor had voor deze problemen. De katholieke Vereniging van de Franse Jeugd heeft een elite bij de jeugd gevormd door ze vertrouwd te maken met het syndicalisme bij boeren en arbeiders. De «Sillon» onder de lei- ding van Victor Diligent is zeer aktief geweest op het gebied van de volksop- voeding en van het syndicalisme. Na 1918 werken de C.F.T.C. en de J.O.C. ver- der in de geest van het sociale katholicisme van het begin van de XXe eeuw.
