Peerage and «Estage» in the Saint-Pol County in the XIIIth Century. Around a Text Published by Charles Du Cange. The short text around which this paper is centered originates from a lost chart collection of the Counts of Saint-Pol. It may be dated between 1232 and 1238, under Count Hughes V de Châtillon. It consists in a note reporting the terms of an agreement settled between Hughes V and the peers of his Saint-Pol castle, about the military obligations which these latter owed him (garding of the castle and defence of the county). Unique in its kind, this document provides a precious testimony on the feudal realities it deals with. Rich in details on the concrete modalities of the garding duty, here named « estage », it above all raises a corner of the veil on the men who had to enforce it. In general, the peers, these groups of privileged knights whom many dynasts in Flanders and Picardy choose to surround themselves with, remain very ill known. A close study of Saint-Pol's case, relying on the 1232-1238 convention and the few local charts mentioning the peers, will even lead to questioning the conclusions of the major study on the topic, Pierre Feuchère's. The age of the institution, its functions, the number and quality of its members are as many aspects that have to be reassessed with caution and notably through what was observed by Leopold Génicot in the Namur area. A critical edition of the convention is published in an annex.

Le court texte qui est au centre de cet article provient d'un chartrier perdu des comtes de Saint-Pol. Il peut être daté entre 1232 et 1238, sous le règne du comte Hugues V de Châtillon. Il s'agit d'une notice rapportant les termes d'un accord conclu entre Hugues V et les pairs de son château de Saint-Pol, à propos des obligations militaires que ceux-ci lui devaient (garde du château et défense du comté). Unique en son genre, ce document apporte un témoignage précieux sur les réalités féodales dont il traite. Riche en détails sur les modalités concrètes du service de garde, appelé ici « estage », il lève surtout un coin du voile recouvrant les hommes qui y étaient astreints. D'une manière générale, les pairies, ces groupes de chevaliers privilégiés dont s'entourèrent nombre de dynastes en Flandre et en Picardie, restent fort mal connues. Un examen serré du cas saint-polois, à partir de la convention de 1232-1238 et des rares chartes locales mentionnant les pairs, conduit d'ailleurs à remettre en cause les conclusions de la principale étude sur le sujet, à savoir celle de Pierre Feuchère. L'ancienneté de l'institution, ses fonctions, le nombre et la qualité de ses membres sont autant d'aspects qu'il convient de réévaluer avec prudence, en tenant compte, notamment, de ce qu'a observé Leopold Genicot dans le Namurois. Une édition critique de la convention est donnée en annexe.

Het onderwerp van dit artikel is een korte tekst uit een verloren charterboek van de graven van Saint-Pol, dat kan gedateerd worden tussen 1232 en 1238, onder de rege- ring van graaf Hugues V de Chatillon. Het gaat om een notitie betreffende het akkoord tussen de graaf en de paladijnen van zijn kasteel over hun militaire verplichtingen (bewaking en verdediging). Dit document brengt unieke informatic over een stukje feodale werkelijkheid en heel wat concrete details over de wachtdienst, die hier «estage» heet. Wat meer is, men krijgt er een beter zicht op de mannen die eraan meewerkten. Over de groepen ridders, «pairies» geheten, waarmee de Vlaamse en Picardische vorsten zich omringden, is weinig bekend. Het onderzoek van dit voor- beeld in Saint-Pol uit 1232-1238 en van de zeldzame charters die pairs vermelden, leidt tot een in vraag stelling van de voornaamste studie op dit gebied, die van Pierre Feuchere. Men is aan een voorzichtige reevaluatie toe van de ouderdom van die instelling, haar functie, aantal en kwaliteit van de leden, rekening houdend met de bevindingen van Leopold Genicot in de streek van Namen. In bijlage is er een critische uitgave van die overeenkomst.
