Pierre Bruyelle, The Urban Framework of Northern France Down to the Second World War : Mutations and Permanence. Over one hundred and fifty years, Northern France went through major transformations, under the impact of the industrial, transport, urban and demographic revolutions. These latter deeply disrupted the inherited urban systems. The new forms of urbanization, in their localization and their use responded to a new logic, but did not eliminate the more ancient forms, through their reliance on permanent features and even inertias. The combination, the interference of several urban logics account for the complexity of the regional organization, a complexity that was already partly established at the end of the XVIIIth century and for the fact that classical theories, that aim at explaining the organization and ranking of the cities, apply only partially.

En cent cinquante ans, la France du Nord a subi des bouleversements considérables, sous l'impact de la révolution industrielle, de celle des transports, des mutations urbaines et démographiques. Ces dernières ont profondément perturbé les systèmes urbains hérités. Les nouvelles formes d'urbanisation, dans leurs localisations et leurs fonctions répondaient à une nouvelle logique, mais n'ont pas supprimé les formes antérieures, en s'ap- puyant sur des permanences, voire des inerties. La combinaison, l'interférence de plusieurs logiques urbaines expliquent la complexité de l'organisation régionale, complexité déjà partiellement acquise à la fin du XVIIIe siècle, et le fait que les théories classiques, qui visent à expliquer l'agencement et la hiérarchisation des villes, ne s'y vérifient que partiellement.
