The age of soils and alluvial materials of the Central Ried of Alsace. Example of a test area near Illhaeusern, Haut-Rhin, France The soil mapping of a part of the Central Ried of Alsace (Ried ello-rhénan) south of the village of Illhaeusern and observations of soil horizons along a transect demonstrate that peaty formations were buried under alluvial materials. The peat was developed in channels and depressions during the Subboreal period and at the beginning of the Subatlantic. The peaty layers were covered by fine alluvial materials coming from the Ill River or from the Rhine system. The 14C datings of the tops of the peat layers show that the burial of the peat happened sooner at the proximity of the oriental part of the Central Ried. It appears that it is the subsidence of the part of the Ried situated near the Ill River that is responsible for the early deposit of the fine alluvial material.

La cartographie des sols et l'observation des divers horizons le long d'un transect coupant le Ried ello-rhénan au Sud d'Ilihaeusern ont mis en évidence des tourbes de chenaux fossilisées sous des épandages alluviaux originaire de l'Ill ou du Rhin. Les tourbières se sont édifiées au cours du Subboréal et au début du Subatlantique. Dans ce secteur, les alluvions ont recouvert les tourbes d'autant plus tôt que les chenaux se trouvaient à proximité de l'Ill. Ceci témoignerait d'un affaissement subsident de la partie centrale du Ried qui a servi pendant tout le Subatlantique de réceptacle aux alluvions fines apportées par l'Ill.
