For a « combinative » geography. — There are certain paradoxical elements in the attack on tropical geography, especially in the sharpness of the critique against the Gourou paradigm. This paradox is evidence of the growing pains suffered by a new geography which has already contributed so much to a better understanding of the contemporary world. In this paper an attempt is made to transcend the sterile dichotomy between « tropical geography » and « Thirld World geography ». A proposal is made for a combinative approach, which would take into account environment, civilization, socio-eco-political strategies and representations and ideologies. This would foster an understanding of the Thirld World — tropical or otherwise — and of its particular areas, and would imply the recognition of the specificity of geographical entities, as well as of the worldwide factors which impinge on them.

L'acuité des attaques menées contre la géographie tropicale, et contre le paradigme de P. Gourou qui l'exprime au mieux, ne va pas sans certains paradoxes, témoignant à leur manière de ce que l'on pourrait appeler la crise d'adolescence d'une nouvelle géographie ayant grandement contribué à une meilleure compréhension du monde d'aujourd'hui. Quelques remarques faites à cet égard invitent à dépasser une dichotomie tropicalité/Tiers Monde qui deviendrait stérile en se figeant, et conduisent à proposer une géographie combinatoire prenant en comptes milieux, civilisations, stratégies socio-éco-politiques et représentations, et tentant d'appréhender l'espace du Tiers Monde, tropical ou non, et les espaces particuliers qui le constituent en analysant à la fois les « individus géographiques » irréductibles et les forces mondiales agissant sur eux.
