Psalm 44 :8 ("... God has anointed you . . ." ) was interpreted by the Arians as indicating the elevation of the Son to eternity. Hilary does not see any reason to apply it to the eternal generation of the Word. He understands Psalm 44 :8 in relation to the incarnation, which marks the assumption of our humanity in Christ. This is the cause of the merit on which Psalm 44 :8 makes the divine anointing depend.
